SUNRISE, Fla. (Jan. 23, 2012) – Officials from Thor Guard, the leader in lightning prediction systems for golf courses, commercial and industrial businesses, will discuss ways PGA professionals can take advantage of today’s advanced technology to enhance the safety of golfers and staff members at their facilities.
The 30-minute presentation, which will be led by Thor Guard President Robert Dugan and Director of Weather Greg Quinn, will begin at 9 a.m. on Friday in the Business Solution Zone of the PGA Merchandise Show.
The importance of understanding the differences between lightning prediction and detection technologies will be among the topics discussed. Lightning detection systems are limited by the fact they must recognize an actual strike before they issue a warning. Prediction systems, which are based on changes in the atmosphere’s electromagnetic field, provide warnings in advance of a strike. “The difference in the two technologies could be the difference between life and death,” Dugan said.
Radar imagery, severe storm research and practices Thor Guard employs in its weather advisory roles to the USGA and LPGA also will be discussed.
