January 30, 2012 – Fairways + Greens Magazine added to its multi-year run of journalistic excellence at the 2012 International Network of Golf Media Awards, announced Jan. 26 during the 58th Annual PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando, Fla. The travel and lifestyle publication, which celebrates its 15th anniversary this year, nabbed one First Place nod for photography, two Outstanding Achievement awards for travel writing and one Outstanding Achievement each for profile and equipment writing.
Longtime Fairways + Greens competition photographer Bob Solorio took second straight first place honors for his whimsical shot of actor, comedian and avid celebrity golfer Bill Murray bouncing a ball off his putter during the 2012 AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. Murray went on to win the pro-am alongside his PGA Tour playing partner, D.A. Points.
“This shot jumped right out at us after Bob had submitted his excellent work from the AT&T,” said Vic Williams, golf group publisher for Fairways + Greens’ parent company, Quincy, Mass.-based Madavor Media. “Of course, Bill Murray is a walking photo-op at this event, and has been for years, but this particular photo has it all – immediacy, a fun spirit and that unmistakable sense of what this tournament is, and why it’s one of the most popular stops on tour.”
The actor has a long history with the magazine. In past years Murray has been a frequent photo subject in Fairways + Greens, and was the subject of an in-depth cover profile in 2007.
Williams himself took home an Outstanding Achievement awards for “The Essential Bandon,” a 6,000-word, 16-page cover feature that appeared in the July-August 2011. Managing Editor Darin Bunch followed up his strong showing in the previous year’s ING Awards with an Outstanding Achievement nods for “Wild and Spooky Fun,” his December 2010 getaway piece on Mystic Resort in Myrtle Beach, S.C., and “Hickory Dickering,” an account of his love affair with vintage hickory golf clubs from the March-April 2011 issue.
Filling out the magazine’s award haul this year was “Cornish Game Plan,” frequent freelance contributor Katharine Dyson’s July-August 2011 profile of renowned New England golf course architect Geoffrey Cornish.
This year’s quintet of honors led all magazines entered in the ING competition, beating out such well-respected nationals as GolfWeek and surpassing last year’s tally of four awards. “Like most publications, Fairways + Greens is constantly evolving and dedicated to giving its audience the best possible content – words and images that truly engage them, keep them reading and give them the information they need to plan and execute their dream golf vacations,” Williams says. “These latest awards show that we’re on the right track, but we’re never satisfied. We’re going to get even bigger and better.”
