Major winner Paul Lawrie continues success on European Tour with Wilson Staff irons and moves into Top-50 world ranking
CHICAGO, Feb. 6 , 2012 – Wilson Staff Advisory Member and European Tour player Paul Lawrie continued his fantastic form since re-signing with Wilson Golf two years ago as he stormed to a four-shot victory in the Commercialbank Qatar Masters, joining the world’s top 50 players for the first time since 2003.
In the final round of an event cut to 54 holes due to strong winds, the 1999 Open champion chipped in twice to fire a flawless 65 – the joint lowest score of the day – to preserve his one shot lead and hold off strong challenges from young Australian sensation Jason Day and Ryder Cup player Peter Hanson.
Lawrie’s victory, the second Qatar Masters win of his career, marks a successful relationship with the Wilson Staff FG Tour irons since re-signing with the famous manufacturer in 2010 – a period that has brought a first title in nine years at the 2011 Open de Andalucia.
“I don’t think I can play much better than that,” said Lawrie after he finished with a 15-under par total to claim a seventh European Tour title. “When you’ve got a chance to win a tournament, you don’t sleep as well the night before and things go racing through your mind. You’ve got to get back to basics and I did that. I hit some nice shots coming in.”
The victory also guarantees the 43-year old a place in the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play in Arizona later this month and the Volvo World Match Play in Spain in May.
“We’re extremely proud of Paul Lawrie’s outstanding performance in Qatar,” said Tim Clarke, general manager at Wilson Golf. “Lawrie’s dedication to the game has helped influence the development of our golf equipment and we’re pleased to be a part of his success on Tour.”
Major winner Paul Lawrie currently plays the Wilson Staff FG Tour irons, carries the iconic Wilson Staff red and white Tour bag, and wears the Wilson Staff headwear.
