ORLANDO, Fla. (Feb. 29, 2012) – Golfweek has announced a new partnership between The Fred Haskins Commission and The Greenbrier, which will provide the 2012 Fred Haskins Award winner exemption to play in The Greenbrier Classic (July 5-8) in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va. This exemption represents the first time that a Haskins Award winner will be automatically invited to compete against 156 PGA Tour players in this popular event.
“These are thrilling times for the members of the Haskins Commission,” said Haskins Commission Chairman Madden Hatcher, Jr. “Our past winners continue to achieve in professional golf; we are expanding our relationships with such outstanding institutions as Stifel Nicolaus and Golfweek; and now, the 2012 Haskins winner will have the opportunity to play in The Greenbrier Classic. These expansions only add to the excitement the commission feels every year as we honor successful college golfers with the coveted Haskins Award, and we know that excitement will grow as long as we continue to celebrate the values and legacy of Fred Haskins.”
Sponsored by Stifel, Nicolaus & Company, Inc., the Haskins Award recognizes the year’s top Division I golfer as determined by the votes of NCAA golfers and golf coaches, national golf writers and columnists, golf-specific television media and previous Haskins Award winners.
“We are thrilled about our new partnership with The Greenbrier and their support of the Haskins Award,” said Ron Kruszewski, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Stifel Financial Corp. “The Haskins Award is truly the ‘Heisman Trophy’ of the golf world, and to be a part of offering its winner this amazing exemption is a great honor for our organization.”
Voting for the Haskins Award opens after the NCAA regionals and ends June 10. The winner will be announced June 12 and will be the guest of honor at the 2012 Haskins Award dinner held at The Greenbrier July 2.
“This year, America’s Resort will host the No. 1 tournament on Tour, in the No. 1 state in the Union, on the birthday of the No. 1 country in the world, and I am delighted to add the nation’s No. 1 amateur award, the Haskins Award, to this incredible confluence of events,” said James C. Justice II, chairman of The Greenbrier. “As far as golf, patriotism and witnessing the future of this great game are concerned, there will not be a better place on the planet than The Greenbrier during The Greenbrier Classic.”
The addition of The Greenbrier exemption serves to heat up an already highly competitive race for the coveted award, and golf fans can follow all the action with the “Golfweek Haskins Watch.” Each week, Golfweek ranks the individual play of NCAA golfers using the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index, which provides an excellent indicator of who will be on top when the Haskins Award votes are cast at the end of the season.
