Will oversee golf academy and instruction for Southworth Development
Boston, Massachusetts – February 29, 2012 – Renaissance, one of the premier private clubs located on Boston’s North Shore, and a finalist for the NGCOA’s national ‘Course of the Year,’ is pleased to announce that Kirk Hanefeld has been appointed Director of Instruction at Renaissance and will head up a new state-of-the-art golf academy to be built at the club.
A highly recognized player, instructor and ambassador for the game, Kirk Hanefeld’s career has seen him compete and win at the sport’s highest levels since earning his Class “A” PGA membership card 29 years ago. In 2006, Kirk joined the Champions Tour and has since made 58 of 61 cuts on the Tour. He has also qualified and played in 23 Major Championships including one U.S. Open, one PGA Championship, six Senior PGA Championships, six Senior British Opens, three U.S. Senior Opens, five Senior Players Championships and one Tradition. Twice, he has won the PGA of America’s Southworth Senior PGA Professional National Championship – including last year at Southworth’s own Creighton Farms. In 2008, Kirk was named the PGA of America’s “Senior Player of the Year.”
“In the pantheon of modern-day New England golf, few names shine as brightly as that of Kirk Hanefeld,” said David Southworth, President and CEO of Southworth Development. “His longevity is a testament to his skill and ability to adapt to different courses, and it delights us that he can pass those skills on to our members. All of us at Southworth are extremely pleased that Kirk will be the new Director of Instruction and head of our new state-of-the-art golf academy at Renaissance.”
At Renaissance, Kirk will head up a new golf academy that’s being created to serve Renaissance members, members at other Southworth clubs, and will additionally be open to others who seek the very best in golf instruction. The Renaissance-based facility will serve as headquarters for golf academies scheduled to be created at other Southworth properties, including PGA Village – The Bahamas, which is currently under development on Cat Island. Focusing on “Total Game Improvement,” the academy will offer expert golf instruction to men, women and juniors of all playing abilities, including full-swing and short-game schools and clinics. Construction is slated to begin on a state-of-the-art Teaching Studio at Renaissance in Fall 2012.
“My experience playing the Champions Tour full time over the past six years has been nothing short of sensational. As a career-long Club Professional, I’ve had the opportunity to play and compete with some of the best players in the world,” Mr. Hanefeld said. He continued, “I’m very proud to be part of the Southworth organization, a leader in the international golf community. I’m also excited about the opportunity to develop the first Golf Academy at Renaissance — and I’m looking forward to helping create others at Southworth properties world-wide.”
Closer to home, Kirk has captured titles at three New England PGA Section Championships – more than any other active member. He’s also won five New England State Open Championships. Other achievements include being named the New England PGA’s Professional of the Year and Merchandiser of the Year. Additionally, Kirk has also served as section Vice President and as a committee member on the National Club Professional Competitions Committee.
Prior posts at New England clubs include positions as Director of Golf at The International Golf Club in Bolton, Mass., Director of Club Operations at The Ridge Club in Sandwich, Mass., and Director of Golf at Salem Country Club in Peabody, Mass.
Kirk is a native of Somersworth, N.H. and currently resides in Acton, Mass. with his wife, Kathleen and son, Ryan.
