Stafford, VA – Representing the Maryland Golf Alliance, President of the MAPGA John Malinowski, PGA, Head Professional of Montgomery Country Club in Laytonsville, Maryland and MAPGA Executive Director Jon Guhl visited with Delegates, Senators and Governor O’Malley in Annapolis, Maryland to officially proclaim March 6, 2012 as Maryland Golf Day. Bringing golf to the attention of lawmakers in Maryland is significant as the golf industry has made a powerful impact on the economy in the “Old Line State.”
The size of Maryland’s total golf economy is approximately $1.3 billion, supporting nearly 14,700 jobs with an annual wage income of $408 million. Those findings and more are part of a Maryland Golf’s Economic Impact Report, commissioned by GOLF 20/20 for the Maryland Golf Alliance (Middle Atlantic PGA, Maryland State Golf Association, Mid-Atlantic Association of Golf Course Superintendents, National Golf Course Owner’s Association and the Club Managers Association of America) and prepared by SRI International (based on 2010 data). The study served as part of the Governor’s proclamation and resolutions from the Maryland Senate and the Maryland House of Delegates for 2012 Maryland Golf Day at the Maryland State House in Annapolis.
Additional statistics from the study…
• In 2010, the size of Maryland’s direct golf economy was approximately $727.2 million. This is comparable to revenues generated by key industries in the state, such as medical equipment and supplies manufacturing ($457.7 million), agricultural crops ($691.6 million), and data processing and hosting services ($1.648 billion)
• In 2011, the U.S. Open was conducted in Maryland, drawing 230,000 spectators with an impact of more than $100 million.
• The total amount of charitable giving attributed to the game of golf in Maryland approached $337 million in 2010.
• Maryland’s 189 golf courses, 34 stand-alone ranges, and 34 miniature golf facilities generated $386.8 million in revenue in 2010.
