March 6, 2012 – Birmingham, AL – Honours Golf Company has announced several new additions and appointments for the City of Montgomery Golf Courses – Lagoon Park and Gateway. Both courses are located in Montgomery, Alabama and are gearing up for the 2012 season.
“As we move into the spring season, we are excited to implement a myriad of player development and family golf programs at Lagoon Park and Gateway,” stated Bob Barrett, chief executive officer for Honours Golf. “We are very confident the team we have in place will be instrumental in helping us grow the game and making golf more affordable and enjoyable to residents of the Greater Montgomery area.”
John Sadie has been promoted to director of instruction for the City of Montgomery golf courses. Sadie, who most recently served as general manager for Lagoon Park, has an extensive coaching background which includes serving as the head golf coach for the University of North Florida and Huntingdon College, as well as assistant golf coach for the University of Arkansas. Sadie was awarded the National Coach of the Year four times and named the USA head golf coach of World University Games in Madrid, Spain. Sadie’s expertise will be instrumental in this newly appointed position. In his new role, Sadie will oversee all golf instruction, player development, and family-oriented programs for Lagoon Park and Gateway golf courses, as well as support The First Tee of Montgomery program. Sadie will also manage the day-to-day operations for Gateway Golf Course.
“I’m looking forward to the numerous opportunities we have in growing the game in Montgomery,” stated John Sadie. “My intention is to create a lot of fun activities and get the local community excited about golf.”
Mark Savoy joined Lagoon Park Golf Course as the new director of golf. Savoy is a seasoned PGA Professional with over 25 years of golf management experience. His career in the industry includes a solid operational background with management experience at resort, private and public courses in Montana, Ohio, Virginia, Texas and Wyoming. Most recently, Savoy served as head golf professional and resort retail manager for Big Sky Golf Course, an 18-hole Arnold Palmer designed resort course located in Montana. In his new role, Savoy will oversee the entire golf operations for Lagoon Park as well as play an integral role in the development of tournament operations, membership and customer service at the 18-hole public golf course.
Wes Pitts has been appointed to golf course superintendent for Lagoon Park and Gateway golf courses. Pitts most recently served as assistant superintendent of the award-winning King & Bear Golf Course at the World Golf Village Resort in St. Augustine, Florida. Prior to that, Pitts spent five years as assistant superintendent with the Sea Island Company in St. Simons, Georgia. Pitts is a GCSAA member and a native of Montgomery. He brings with him extensive tournament preparation experience and agronomic knowledge. Pitts will be responsible for upholding Honours’ turf care standards and providing exceptional playing conditions on both golf courses.

Located in Montgomery, Alabama, Lagoon Park is an 18-hole 6,773-yard golf course designed by Charles M. Graves & Associates. The city-owned golf course is part of a multi-purpose sports facility complete with a soft ball complex and tennis center. Originally built in 1978 on reclaimed land, it features a challenging layout with tree-lined fairways, medium to large sized greens and more than 35 bunkers throughout the parkland style golf course. Gateway Golf Course is the newer of the two municipal golf courses. Built in 2006, it features a 3,000-yard, Par 35, nine-hole layout, along with an extensive driving range and practice area. In addition, the golf course is home to the First Tee of Montgomery and is part of a multi-sports facility complete with numerous fields for baseball, soccer and football; skiing and fishing lake; and onsite banquet hall and meeting lodge. The golf course is conveniently located off of Interstate I-65 and within an easy driving distance of Lagoon Park.
