Classic design to be modernized, renamed ‘The Fazio Course’
(PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla.) — PGA National Resort & Spa – the legendary South Florida destination and home of the PGA TOUR Honda Classic – announces its Haig Course will close on April 2 to undergo an extensive renovation and reopen this Nov. 1 as “The Fazio Course.”
“The Fazio Course will join four other championship layouts here at PGA National making for 90 holes of exceptional golf,” says Century Golf Partners CEO Jim Hinckley, operating golf partner of PGA National.
Originally designed by George and Tom Fazio in tribute to five-time PGA champion Walter Hagen, The Haig was the first course opened for play at PGA National in 1980. As the third generation of the acclaimed Fazio family to work on The Haig, Tom Fazio II will spearhead the efforts to modernize the noted shot maker’s layout.
“That my great uncle, uncle and I have all had a hand in developing this beautiful course at PGA National will stand as a proud testament to the Fazio family legacy,” says Tom Fazio II.
With the original par-72 routing remaining intact, the renovation combines the best of classic golf architecture and advances in modern technology, course design and agronomics, including:
– Total green surface will increase nearly 70 percent from 1.5 acres to 2.5 acres and grassed with TifEagle.
– Grass on tees and fairways will change to Celebration Bermudagrass.
– Tee-boxes will be reconfigured from circular to square.
– In response to advances in equipment, total course yardage will be lengthened to over 7,000 yards.
– In accordance with the popular “Tee it Forward” initiative sponsored by the PGA and USGA, player-friendly tees will be added allowing the course to be played at 5100 yards.
– The latest irrigation technology will be installed throughout
“Our new Fazio Course is a prime example of our never-ending goal of being the best golf destination in not only the U.S., but the world,” says Joel Paige, vice president and managing director. “We continue to create a premier championship experience by raising the bar for our members and resort guests.”
With its four other championship courses open for play during the renovation, no disruption of available tee-times is expected. For more information on PGA National Resort & Spa visit www.pgaresort.com, or call (800) 533.9386.
