LAKE MARY, FL – One of the Orlando area’s most popular tournament courses, Timacuan Golf And Country Club, has been chosen by the USGA to host a U.S. Open Local Qualifying Tournament on May 17. It marks the third straight year that Timacuan has hosted this event.
A total of 84 players will tee it up for five or six spots in the sectional qualifier, with the hope of eventually making it to the U.S. Open in June at The Olympic Club in San Francisco.
Timacuan has hosted several tournaments of national scope already in 2012. Those events include the $10,000 Timacuan Scramble, the NGA Tour with several Nationwide Tour players, the Ladies Suncoast Tour, the Hurricane Tour Junior Tour with over 100 top players from across the world, The Golf Channel Amateur Tour, the Moonlight Mini Tour and the U.S. Kids Tour.
“Timacuan has a storied tradition of hosting great players and great tournament golf in the Central Florida market,” said Nate Stevenson, Assistant Director of Golf Operations. “Being a championship layout with six sets of tees, the course is extremely playable for any level of golfer. We have a business attitude that promotes and supports junior golf and tournament play at the highest level.”
Timacuan received rave reviews from the dozen PGA and LPGA Tour players who competed in the $10,000 Timacuan Scramble in January.
Said LPGA Tour star Brittany Lincicome, “This is a terrific golf course. It is a good test of golf. You have to be able to move the ball around to be successful here.”
“It is a great golf course,” said Chris Ross, whose team of NGA Mini-Tour players won the $10,000 Timacuan Scramble. “You have to think about where you place your drive, based on the pin placements. Hitting from the correct side of the fairway was really important on this course. It’s all about the angles.”
Timacuan features two distinctly different nines. The front nine has a Scottish feel, with open fairways, mounding, sprawling bunkers and large greens. The back nine has more of a Carolinas Low Country feel featuring stately oaks, tall pines, and several water hazards that demand precision off the tee and to the green.
