The Dunes’ par-5 13th hole, nicknamed “Waterloo,” is the signature hole for the Robert Trent Jones design
April 9, 2012, Myrtle Beach, S.C. – The Dunes Golf and Beach Club’s par-5 13th hole has been recognized as the third “Most Memorable Golf Hole” in the state for 2012 by the South Carolina Golf Course Ratings Panel.
The majority of more than 100 voting panelists chose Harbour Town’s finishing par-4 hole as the most memorable, followed by the par-3 17th at Kiawah Island Resort’s Ocean Course. The short mountaintop par-3 13th hole at The Cliffs at Glassy was voted fourth most memorable and Caledonia Golf and Fish Club’s par-4 finishing hole was fifth.
The 13th hole is the signature hole of the Robert Trent Jones design at The Dunes and it carries the nickname “Waterloo.” Famous golf writer Dan Jenkins once said of the 590-yard horseshoe-shaped layout that hugs Lake Singleton on the right that the “only way to reach the green is to charter a boat.”
Only the longest hitters can challenge the green in two shots, and more good rounds have been wrecked here than on any other hole on the course. As a testament to that fact, a plaque at the tee commemorates the 22 that Charles Bartlett scored there in a past golf writers’ tournament.
“We are honored to be recognized for having one of the most memorable and most photographed golf holes in the State,” said Dennis Nicholl, Dunes Club head professional. “The 13th hole at The Dunes is a hole you either love or hate. But the more you play it, the more you gain an appreciation for Jones’ classic design.”
Golfweek recently ranked The Dunes the fifth “Best Course You Can Play” in South Carolina for 2012.
The South Carolina Ratings Panel also recognized (including ties) the 11th hole at the Country Club of Charleston, the 17th at Harbour Town, the 17th at The Cliffs at Keowee Vineyards, the 18th at the Kiawah Island Resort’s Ocean Course, the 18th at Wild Dunes (Links Course) and the 6th at Yeamans Hall Club.
