Roscommon, Mi – The transformation of the nationally-rated Forest Dunes Golf Club into a destination resort continues with the addition of an acclaimed chef with an impressive track record at prestigious private clubs.
The hiring of Chef Michael R. Green emphasizes the commitment and stability of the club’s ownership in providing the best amenities for discerning visitors who come to play and stay at Forest Dunes, said General Manager Todd Campbell.
Campbell also announced another key addition to management, the hiring of his former colleague, Fred Bauer, who spent more than 14 years as general manager and controller at nearby Garland Resort. At Forest Dunes Bauer will be the operations manager. Campbell also served in various management roles at Garland for nearly two decades.
“I really want to stress how excited I am to have Michael and Fred as part of Forest Dunes’ new management team,” Campbell said. “Each brings a tremendous amount of experience and talent that will be vital to our success in the coming season and for years to come.”
When Campbell joined Forest Dunes in February, he said his first priority was to elevate the dining experience in the club’s restaurant to the first-class levels of the magnificent clubhouse and the world-class golf course. Bringing Chef Green aboard is the first step, Campbell said.
Green most recently was executive chef for six years at the Lochmoor Country Club in Grosse Pointe Woods. He also served in the same position for five years at the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club. Earlier in his career he was a sous chef among other roles he carried out at the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel. Since 1992, he had been sharing his experience with students at Schoolcraft Community College, one of the state’s top schools for aspiring chefs.
Campbell said hiring a chef of Green’s caliber reinforces the commitment made by Lew Thompson to remake the club into a sparkling gem when he and his investors bought Forest Dunes late last year.
Already in the works is a 22-room inn with four luxurious suites that will be ready to receive guest at the start of the 2013 golf season.
Thompson is a trucking executive from Arkansas who leads a partnership that owns and operates The Bridges Golf & Country Club in Montrose, on Colorado’s Western Slope, halfway between Grand Junction and Telluride. That club features a Jack Nicklaus-designed course. Members will have reciprocal playing arrangements at both clubs.
Forest Dunes is ranked at 45 on Golf Magazine’s list of the nation’s Top 100 courses. Readers of Golf World magazine selected it as the top public course in the country. It is No. 20 on Golf Digest magazine’s list of the 100 greatest public courses in America, and is a perennial choice on Golf Week’s list of their Top 100 modern courses in the country.
The 1,300-acre club is just over two hours from the northern suburbs of Metropolitan Detroit and less than 15 miles off I-75 at Exit 239.
