Jackson, New Jersey (April 17, 2012) … Metedeconk National Golf Club-one of the top private clubs in the country and boasting an award-winning golf course-is holding a first-of-its-kind golf tournament for private high schools throughout New Jersey.
The Metedeconk Prep Challenge will be held on May 20 at 1:00 pm on the club’s 18-hole Tournament Course. The Robert Trent Jones, Sr./Roger Rulewich-designed layout was recently ranked 85th among the country’s modern (post-1960) courses by Golfweek magazine.
Two-man teams from 20 private schools will compete in an 18-hole better ball stroke-play format. The teams, coaches, and parents will be guests of the club for the day. The event will include lunch and culminate with an awards presentation and barbecue. The winning team will receive a trophy, to hold for a year, while a perpetual trophy will remain on display at the club. Every participant will also receive a memento of the event.
“The only way golf is going to grow is if we involve the next generation,” says Bob Lerner, a Metedeconk member who has been the driving force behind the tournament. “The membership feels it is important to share the Metedeconk experience with young people. We want them to understand that golf isn’t about business or prestige: It’s about loving the game.”
Neither the schools nor the players will pay to participate as all costs are being covered by the club. Five golf-equipment companies have come on as sponsors-Callaway, Cobra, TaylorMade, Nike and Titleist-along with the Princeton branch of PNC Bank.
“The Prep Challenge is largely member-supported,” says Lerner, “and the response has been overwhelming. That says everything you need to know about Metedeconk. The members love and respect the game and want the kids to see that. I’ve even had a number of members say that they’ll be in the gallery watching.”
The public is invited to view the competition. For more information, contact Metedeconk’s head golf professional, John Rutecki, or go to www.metedeconk.org.
Celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2012, Metedeconk has received 2012 Club of the Year honors from the New Jersey Golf Course Owners Association and the NJ Section of the PGA in 2010. The club’s practice facility, perennially considered among the finest in the northeast, was recently named best in the state by Golf Styles New Jersey.
