ORLANDO, Fla. (May 1, 2012) – Golfweek – the most authentic, authoritative and independent voice in golf – once again celebrates the very best in public-access golf with the release of its 7th annual Golfweek’s Best Courses You Can Play special issue. Featuring a comprehensive state-by-state listing of the country’s greatest public-access courses, the digest-sized Golfweek’s Best Courses You Can Play guide serves as an invaluable resource for avid golfers in search of unforgettable golf experiences from coast to coast.
“This list of the country’s best public-access courses runs the gamut, including four courses that have held U.S. Opens – Bethpage State Park-Black (No. 1 in N.Y.), Pebble Beach (No. 1 in Calif.), Pinehurst-No. 2 (No. 1 in N.C.) and Torrey Pines-South (No. 9 in Calif.) – as well as two that are slated to hold U.S. Opens, Chambers Bay (No. 1 in Wash.) and Erin Hills (No. 5 in Wis.),” said Bradley S. Klein, national director of Golfweek’s Best Courses rating program. “It also includes readily affordable daily-fees and the kind of simple, fun municipal layouts where many of us learned the game.”
As a complement to the 2012 rankings, Golfweek’s Best Courses You Can Play also delivers editorial articles that underscore the importance of location when designing a course, including a look at how great course architecture embodies the character of the land and an overview of the diverse landscapes found among this year’s Golfweek’s Best honorees. In addition, the special issue offers full course statistics and information on many of the featured golf clubs included on the list.
To build Golfweek’s Best Courses You Can Play list, an experienced team of more than 725 evaluators rated each public layout on the basis of 10 criteria, including routing, conditioning, variety and memorability of holes. The result is an average of scores that dictate a course’s overall ranking. The number of courses per state varies on this list based on the course supply, population and level of play in each state.
