Greensboro, Ga. (May 1, 2012) – Reynolds Platation’s Oconee Clubhouse has been honored in Golf Inc. Magazine’s annual Clubhouse of the Year competition that showcases the best new, renovated and remodeled clubhouses from around the world.
Overall, Golf Inc. Magazine honored seven clubhouses this year – four new private clubs, two public courses and one renovation. Three judges, with operational and architectural backgrounds, reviewed all entries. The Oconee Clubhouse was awarded second place in a field which included world-class entries from California to Egypt.
For the Oconee Clubhouse Angela Grand Design (New York City) was the interior designer and Andy Anderson and Mike Hug of Hug & Associates (Alpharetta, GA) were the architects.
The clubhouse was designed to convey the ambience of an upscale lodge influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement and exudes the “new” feeling that is so essential today to keep clubhouses current and alive. The clubhouse, while elegant and refined, still remains open and inviting.
The interior of the clubhouse is fitted with antique heart pine millwork throughout, creating a warm and inviting palette, accented with custom decorative lighting and finished with elegant and sophisticated wall coverings, carpeting, and furnishings.
The clubhouse exterior is designed in the classical shingle style, with formal symmetry balanced with the natural texture of stained cedar shingles. Large classical columns reinforce the grand scale of the building and provide support for ample exterior covered spaces. The exterior architecture and surrounding landscape coordinate well with the colors, textures and furniture styles selected for the interiors of the clubhouse.
The new clubhouse was rebuilt after the original clubhouse on the site was tragically destroyed in a fire. The new facility was designed to accommodate the golf, dining, and entertainment needs of both members, their guests, as well as guests of the nearby resort and to provide an elegant, yet relaxed atmosphere consistent with the lifestyle.
Frank Benzakour, a judge and general manager of Middle Bay Country Club in Oceanside, NY, commented on the Oconee Clubhouse, “This space was beautifully conceived. The airy atmosphere gives it a great sense of grandeur and elegance. It certainly gives you a ‘feel good’ moment as soon as you enter the club. The choice of furniture compliments the whole building extremely well. Beautifully done.”
