Chesterfield, VA – First Tee Ace-level participant, Matthew Padgett, is a 16 year old Matoaca High School (Chesterfield, VA) sophomore and member of the golf team. Little did he know that a casual round of golf with fellow First Tee participants would turn into something quite memorable.
Following First Tee certification classes on Saturday May 5, 2012, Matthew and his fellow First Tee participants Chase Northcott, Peyton Broach as well as his First Tee coach, Craig Wood, PGA, took to the course for 9-holes where Padgett aced the 80-yard seventh hole using a sand wedge, the young golfer’s first ever hole-in-one.
After much celebrating, Padgett went on to the 130-yard eighth hole with a 9-iron where on his next swing, he got his second hole-in-one! Coach Craig Wood was “running around and screaming,” according to Northcott. “I had tears in my eyes!” the long-time coach added. Yet, according to Northcott, Padgett “still had the composure to make birdie on nine!” He ended the front nine at three under par (5 under on the last three holes!) and texted his mom for a ride home saying nothing more than, “I’m ready.” However, the foursome met mom, Kay Padgett, at the parking lot with the big news. “Matthew wouldn’t shut up the whole way home!” said Kay. Matthew says it was the best weekend ever, beginning on Friday, as it was his sixteenth birthday.
It is believed, without an exhaustive search, that this may only be the second time this has happened in the history of the game (John Hudson in 1971 being the first). Great for Matthew and great for The First Tee!!!
