(KNOXVILLE, TN) – Whittle Springs Golf Course – managed by Billy Casper Golf – will host the 2012 Knoxville City Amateur tournament Thursday, June 14 through Sunday, June 17.

The 72-hole, stroke-play tournament – hosted by Whittle Springs since the 1930s – will be contested between approximately 100 golfers. The City Amateur does not have a cut-line and golfers will be designated into three flights: championship, senior and open. The open flight will be determined after Friday’s round for weekend play.

The entry fee is $160 per player and includes greens fees and competition management daily, a practice round, tee gift and prize eligibility. This year, past winners will compete in a Champions Shootout on Wednesday, June 13.

“It’s an honor for Whittle Springs to host golfers at this storied event each summer,” says Rusty Howell, General Manager of Whittle Springs. “The golf course is in terrific condition and is a great test for all players; we look forward to four days of competition and camaraderie.”

Whittle Springs – Knoxville’s first public golf course – has undergone many incarnations over its 75-plus-year history, continuing to provide enjoyable experiences for golfers of all skill levels. The 18-hole, par-70, 5,729-yard layout is classically designed with small, undulating, bent-grass greens and sloping Bermuda fairways. The full-service golf shop features merchandise from top manufacturers, and a snack bar offers food and beverages.

During the course’s illustrious past, Whittle Springs was part of a well-known resort that included a grand hotel and swimming pool. The course hosted various events which included golf legends Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson and Dow Finsterwald.
