RICHMOND, Va., July 3, 2012 -Bag Boy announced today the winners of the “Golf With Dad” Father’s Day Story Contest.
The Grand Prize winner was Ken Stevenson, Tallahassee, Fla. Stevenson has won two tickets to this year’s Ryder Cup at Medinah Country Club, Ill. Below is an excerpt from his entry:
I opened an issue of Golfweek and in it was a full page ad for Pebble Beach Resort. The caption read ‘My father had never played Pebble Beach’. I mailed that ad to my Dad with a copy of our boarding passes from Tampa to San Francisco. When he got the letter he called and asked what’s this? I told him I booked the trip and we were going in June. We spent 4 days at Pebble and played Spanish Bay and Pebble Beach. We drank Guinness and toasted the bagpiper and we ate like kings. Dad talked about the trip for months, but then his memory started to fade. We took lots of pictures and I created a picture book and gave it to Dad for his birthday hoping he would remember our trip as his memory faded. Today Dad’s memory is pretty well gone. He hasn’t played golf in 3 years and at times he not really sure who I am. I am so glad we took that trip and I only wish we had done it sooner and more often.
Runner-Up was Christopher Carroll, Geneva, N.Y. Below is an excerpt from his entry:
I was twelve, Dad was 34. In one hand was my baseball mitt in the other was a black leather Titleist shag bag. I can still smell the leather and fresh cut grass. No matter what club he used I never had to move more than a few steps in any direction. He was that good. In all the years I caddied for him or played with him I don’t remember him ever asking for a yardage. He was that good. Golf lessons or life lessons, he learned them from his father, I learned them from mine. Next week Dad and I will play together in our favorite Better Ball Tournament for the thirtieth time. I think he’s played in 52. I saw dad the other day, where did the years go? I’m 52, Dad is 74. I’d like to find that shag bag. To me, he’s still that good.
Rounding out the top four entries were Michael Pruitt from Colorado Springs, Colo. and Chris Howe from Petaluma, Calif. Each winner received two prizes, one for themselves and one for their dad. The grand prize winner won two tickets to the Ryder Cup and also a Ryder Cup prize package which included two Ryder Cup stand bags and two Ryder Cup golf towels. The runner-up received two Tri-Swivel push carts by Bag Boy, third place received two Bag Boy’s Revolver LE cart bags and fourth place winner received two Bag Boy T-2000 travel covers. A total of 25 entries received two Devant Ryder Cup towels.
“The number of entries we received for the contest was outstanding,” said Lizzie Leasure, Sales and Marketing Manager, Dynamic Brands. “Our panel of judges read every entry, some brought laughter and some tears. But one thing they all had in common was that golf created a true bond between them. The memories submitted are clearly ones that each son or daughter will hold onto for the rest of their life.”
Other winning excerpts:
I learned to play golf with my grandfather’s clubs, I found them while we were going through and cleaning out his things after he passed away when I was 18, walking for what seemed like endless hours on the course with my dad trying to learn the game, the same course my dad used to play with my grandpa. Now I am a dad and I get to spend my weekends at that same course teaching this great game of golf to my 11 year old daughter and 7 year old son and they love it. Now playing with them and my Dad on Sundays….It’s the best foursome I could ever dream of. Chris Howe, Petaluma, Calif.
I have been golfing with my dad since I was 4 years old, I am 9 now. He always tries to help me get better. Golf is something that we can always do together no matter where we are. We can putt or do chip shots or go to the range or play 9 holes. I love to play golf with my dad. S. McNew, Galloway, N.J.
My Dad was a golf professional that won many local tournaments. I was intimidated as a kid by his great play so it was not till college that I started to play. After I started and was playing about a year my dad asked me to play in a Pro -lady event. I was in shock. He wants to play a tournament with me! Well when I stepped up on the first tee I felt like I was going to pass out. I managed to hit it straight down the fairway, my dad knocked it on the green and I made the putt! We went on to win the low net prize and it was a fantastic day on the course for both of us. MB Crowley, Newton, Mass.
