ONEIDA NATION HOMELANDS (July 17, 2012) Former LPGA Tour player Michelle Murphy has been named assistant golf professional at Turning Stone Resort Casino. Murphy competed on the LPGA Tour in 1998, 2000 and 2001 and has completed all levels of PGA certification.
Along with her LPGA Tour experience, Murphy claimed two victories on the LPGA Futures Tour and three wins on the Players West Tour. She also competed in nine U.S. Women’s Open Championships. In 2006, Michelle served as co-transportation chair for the U.S. Women’s Amateur at Pumpkin Ridge. Earlier that same summer, she qualified to play in the U.S. Women’s Open at Newport CC. She was the only person to have ever competed in a USGA Championship and served as committee chairman in another, in the same year.
The 1990 graduate of the University of New Mexico was a three-time member of the Western Athletic Conference All-Conference team. Murphy was runner-up at the 1988 Women’s Western Amateur Championship and a two-time winner of the Pacific Northwest Golf Association (PNGA) Amateur Championship in 1988 and 1989. She was also an individual qualifier at the NCAA Division I National Tournament during her senior year.
“I’ve been involved in every level of golf: junior golf, high school, college, amateur, mini tour, Europe, Asia, the LPGA, and now as a PGA certified member.” Murphy said. “Of the 26,000 fully-certified PGA of America members, only eight or nine are women, and I’m one of them. To bring my experience to Turning Stone Resort, which has an unmatched reputation everywhere I’ve gone, is very exciting for me.”
Turning Stone Resort Director of Golf Robert Todd said, “Michelle’s goal is to make the game fun for all. I expect Michelle to spread her vast teaching knowledge and on-course experience to our Turning Stone Resort guests, while helping them enjoy the game of golf.”
Murphy comes to Turning Stone Resort after working as an assistant professional at Quintero Golf and Country Club in Peoria, Ariz. and Waverley Country Club in Portland, Ore., as well as serving seven years as head women’s golf coach at the University of Portland. Her teaching credentials also include certification as a Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) instructor specializing in fitness, biomechanics, and junior golf. Murphy has worked as a golf instructor at Intrawest Golf/Stratton Golf Schools in Vermont and Arizona, and at the Junior Golf Associations of Arizona and Washington State.
“As an instructor, I want to make people better golfers,” Murphy said. “I’ve already helped thousands of players – ranging from novice to advanced – with their golf swings, etiquette, course management, and score-saving techniques. I hope to teach thousands more here at Turning Stone.”
Murphy calls the move to Central New York a homecoming of sorts, as her husband has family in Binghamton, about a two-hour drive south of Turning Stone.
