FG Tour irons used to set new Scottish record
CHICAGO, Aug. 26, 2012 – Wilson Staff player Paul Lawrie earned a four-stroke victory to seize the European Tour’s Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles in Scotland, the venue for the 2014 Ryder Cup.
He led the field by one stroke entering into the last round and secured his eighth European Tour victory finishing at 16-under par. At age 43, Lawrie becomes the oldest player to win the tournament and the first Scot to capture three official titles on Scottish soil.
“I’m definitely playing the best golf of my career,” Lawrie stated from Aberdeen. “And I have to say that the confidence I get from playing Wilson Staff clubs has been a major factor in the resurgence in my game, because I’ve been able to improve my greens-in-regulation stats considerably over the past couple of years,” he added.
Using his trusted Wilson Staff FG Tour irons (3-PW), he hit 89% of greens with his irons during his final round. Lawrie returned to playing Wilson Staff irons in January 2010 and last year captured his first Tour victory in seven years.
“We are thrilled for Lawrie and his comeback as a major contender on the European Tour,” said Tim Clarke, general manager, Wilson Golf. “It’s obvious that his confidence is building, especially seeing him hit the ball as long as he did this week. We’re expecting that he will play a contributive role in the upcoming Ryder Cup.”
With his February victory in Qatar and top three finishes in the BMW PGA Championship and Volvo World Match Play, Paul Lawrie climbs to seventh in The Race to Dubai and will return to the 2012 Ryder Cup next month.
The Ryder Cup, which takes place at Medinah Country Club in Medinah, Illinois, is welcomed by Wilson Golf, the Chicago-based company whose irons have captured more Major titles (61) than any other manufacturer. Just days ago, Lawrie was confirmed to represent the European team in next month’s match against the United States.
“It’s been thrilling to witness Paul generate a winning streak with his Wilson Staff irons, and we truly wish him the best in the upcoming Ryder Cup match,” commented Clarke.
