SAN MARTIN, Calif. (August 28, 2012) … Michael Marion has been promoted to the new position of Director of Golf Operations and Memberships at CordeValle, A Rosewood Resort. The Director of Golf at CordeValle the past two years, Marion is assuming an expanded role with the private club and destination resort that will fully utilize his expertise as a golf professional, as well as his proficiency in club development.
“This is a great opportunity for me to focus even more on our members and their guests, yet remain actively involved in golf operations and team building” said Marion, who now will primarily be responsible for Membership inquiries and the introduction of Prospective Members to the newly designed membership opportunities and incentives.
However, Marion will work out of his same office in the golf shop, as his main focus is still enhancing the golf experience and the culture of service in promoting the game for members and their guests.
“At a club like CordeValle, which is so golf-centric, ë think it’s important for members to know I am not just selling them something, and they will never see me again,” Marion said. “It’s all about credibility and our members know they will see me at the golf course, available to help them with any of their needs. I think that is important to them; I know it’s important to me.”
With more than 20 years of experience with private golf clubs, Marion joined CordeValle in the summer of 2010, taking charge of day-to-day golf operations. He created the new Holistic Instructional Program that debuted at CordeValle this spring, as well as overseeing the renovation of the golf shop, promoting women’s club events and developing new member programs. Also, he has been responsible for overseeing all major events at the resort, including the annual Frys.com Open on the PGA Tour, the 25th PGA Cup in 2011 and the annual Gifford Invitational, a major fall collegiate golf tournament.
Marion came to CordeValle from Pronghorn in Bend, Ore., where he served as Director of Golf. Under his direction, Pronghorn was named “No. 1 Golf Community in the Country” by Travel + Leisure magazine in 2009. Also while at Pronghorn, Marion established the club’s first caddie program and Golf Learning Center.
Marion also has served as the Director of Golf at Promontory, the Ranch Club in Park City, Utah, as well as at Elk River Club in Banner Elk, N.C. Marion was the Director of Instruction and later promoted to Associate Professional at the world-renowned Medinah Country Club near Chicago, which features three world-class courses and has played host to numerous major PGA championship tournaments.
Recipient of the Oregon PGA’s “Horton Smith Award” in 2009 for outstanding contributions to the PGA education programs, Marino also is on the advisory staff for Nike Golf and served as Education Co-Chairman for the PGA Pacific Northwest Section.
Growing up near Chicago, Marion’s first golf job was as a caddy at world-renowned Medinah Country Club, where he later became an Associate professional on staff. Honored multiple times by both Golf Magazine and Golf Digest as one of the top golf instructors in the country, Marion holds the prestigious PGA Master classification, which less than 1 percent of PGA members obtain.
Marion enjoys spending time with his family and is a diverse sportsman who also has a passion for riding roller coasters. He lives in Morgan Hill with his wife Tamara and their sons Sloan and Sean.
