ACME, Mich. – After another successful golf season, Grand Traverse Resort and Spa, near Traverse City, Mich. closes out play this year with the Big Hole and Tuff Enuff? Tournaments, two fun events that that have become popular fan favorites.
“Overall we had strong numbers this year and we were up over last year which was a strong season,” The Resort’s Director of Golf Operations Tom McGee said, speaking of the 2012 golf season. “Traverse City experienced more visitors this year and more visitors mean more guests at the resort and more players on the courses.”
The Big Hole event will be staged on Sunday, Oct. 14 on the Resort’s Spruce Run golf course and the Tuff Enuff? event will be played on Sunday Oct. 21 on The Bear.
McGee, said both events were almost sold out last year, and with the upbeat season coming to a close, he expects both could fill their slots this year.
The Big Hole Tournament, in its second year, features 10-inch cups and is a three-person scramble played with six participants teeing off on each hole with a $2,700 pay-out in resort gift cards based on a 60-team turnout.
“People who played the Big Hole last year really enjoyed it,” McGee said.
The Tuff Enuff? tourney is in its fourth year and is exactly what its name suggests – your chance to team up with a buddy and test your mettle under the toughest one-day setup The Bear can offer. A purse of 30 percent of the field or $1,500 based on 50 teams will be up for grabs.
McGee said a unique twist to the Tuff Enuff? tournament is each player, male, female or mixed pairs, plays their own ball in a best ball format around the 7,000-yard course. Even though the track will be rugged, golfers will enjoy some mercy with fair pin placements.
The entry fee for both tournaments is $50 per player with an optional skins game for $10 per player. Players will also receive a gift certificate for Grand Traverse Resort and Spa’s Golf Academy and for both tournaments, participants will get an added bonus – everyone is invited to play any of the courses on the prior Saturday for $30.
Grand Traverse is a year-round facility spread over 900 acres of pure northern Michigan terrain. The resort has nearly 600 guest rooms and condominiums, five restaurants and lounges, including Aerie Restaurant & Lounge on the 16th floor of the sleek 17-story glass tower.
In addition, there are 86,500 square feet of meeting space, the 7,000 square-foot Spa Grand Traverse, a 100,000 square-foot health club with five indoor tennis courts, the Gallery of Shops, four indoor and outdoor pools and hot tubs, as well as a private beach club on Lake Michigan’s Grand Traverse Bay.
The Bear golf course designed by Jack Nicklaus is one of the most well-known tracks in the Midwest. In addition to the Spruce Run course, the resort offers The Wolverine layout designed by Gary Player.
Another valuable amenity for pet lovers is the Dog Dreams Inn, located on the resort grounds, where resort guests can have their furry family members camp-out during their stay.
