Stafford, Va. – Ashley Grier of Hagerstown, Md., a PGA Apprentice Golf Professional at Beaver Creek Country Club, won the 2012 MAPGA Women’s Player of the Year title. This is Grier’s first Player of the Year (POY) honor with the MAPGA as she is a new Apprentice with the PGA of America. Prior to joining the PGA, Grier spent much of the last decade as a player on the LPGA’s Symetra Tour (formerly known as the Futures Tour).
Grier’s successful 2012 season began in May when she played in the MAPGA’s Northern Chapter Championship and finished as the low female professional, earning 200 POY points. Her next first place finish came at the National Car Rental MAPGA Assistant Championship where she was the lowest female professional and also tied for ninth place in the overall division. Yet the icing on the cake for Grier was her victory at the EP Pro MAPGA Women’s Championship which earned her 400 POY points. Along with a great third place finish at the Maryland Women’s Open, Grier completed the 2012 tournament season with a total of 1,350 points; 510 points ahead of second place finisher Joy Bonhurst, PGA of ClubGolf (Gaithersburg, Md.).
“It’s an honor to be the top female professional golfer in the Section,” says Grier who first competed in the Middle Atlantic Section as a teenager on the MPGA Junior Tour. “I’ve grown up watching my dad [David Grier, PGA] and Dirk [Dirk Schultz, PGA] compete and win in this Section and now I’m excited to add some awards of my own.”
