Third annual “Dormie Cup” fundraiser at renowned Dormie Club featured a Ryder Cup battle between North Carolina and Kentucky junior golfers and raised more than $40,000 to benefit the Jack Nicklaus Children’s Healthcare Foundation and CureSearch.
PINEHURST, N.C. (November 2012) – In three short years, the Dormie Cup has raised nearly $100,000 as all-star junior golfers engaged each October in intense Ryder Cup play but even keener competition to raise the most money for many chosen charities.
Named after its host facility the Dormie Club in nearby West End and initiated by participants Patrick Cover (Huntersville, NC) and Thomas Walsh (High Point, NC) as a way to give back to the community, the Dormie Cup started when a dozen junior golfers gathered at Dormie in October 2010. The group was divided into two teams of six for a match-play tournament modeled after the Ryder Cup – its initial Dormie Cup donation totaling more than $10,000.
The second Dormie Cup featured 24 nationally-ranked junior golfers playing two-man teams and resulted in over $35,000, some going to fund junior golf scholarships with the majority benefiting the Wounded Warrior Project which assists veteran who return from action with injuries in their efforts to adjust to life back in the United States.
This year’s event involved 24 juniors from North Carolina and Kentucky once again playing a Ryder Cup format with the winning team decided on the final afternoon. Each participant was challenged to raise a minimum of $1,000 and the golfers responded with more than $47,000.
Due to their outstanding fundraising efforts, four of the boys were the top eight fundraisers in the country for the American Junior Golf Association’s (AJGA) Leadership Links program and will travel to Florida in November for a private meeting with Jack Nicklaus. Cover led the nation in fundraising with a total of $6,158, followed by Fred Allen Meyer (Nicholasville, KY) with $4,280, Andrew Kennedy (Winston-Salem, NC) with $3,365 and Nick Kroustalis (Clemmons, NC) with $3,100.
Some funds will be distributed to the AJGA Ace Grant, which provides funds for needy junior golfers to travel and compete in high-level events. The majority of the funds will be distributed to the Jack Nicklaus Children’s Healthcare Foundation and CureSearch, a national non-profit foundation whose mission is to fund and support children’s cancer research and provide information and resources to all those affected by children’s cancer.
A new addition to this year’s tournament was a Junior-Am on Friday afternoon which raised funds for the First Tee of the Sandhills. More than $1,600 was raised with the funds being matched by the United States Golf Association. Players ended the day with a cocktail party held at the historic home of Donald Ross located in the Village of Pinehurst.
Participants also collected used new and used golf equipment which was donated to the First Tee of the Sandhills.
The highlight of the weekend was the presentation made by the Spivey family of Raleigh, NC, at the Saturday night cookout. Their 15 year old son, Noah, who is fighting his second bought of cancer, spoke about his journey and hope for the future. Cindy Palmer, the Southwest Regional Director of CureSearch, which is involved in Noah’s care, spoke about the organization and how it helps families of children with cancer. Clay Brown, one of the junior players, presented Noah with a commemorative Scotty Cameron headcover as well as a Dormie Cup shirt and hat.
Finally, at this year’s event, keeping a focus on fundraising efforts and those most deserving of the boys’ efforts, tournament organizers presented Fred Allen Meyer with the “Charles G. McCartney Award” in recognition of his fundraising, sportsmanship and how he represents the game of golf and the American spirit. The award is named for Thomas Walsh’s great uncle, “Chuck,” who twice received the Purple Heart and a Bronze Star for wounds sustained in the Battle of the Bulge under General Patton’s command.
