Stafford, Va. – The MAPGA’s Assistant Professional Association (APA) recognized Billy Hoffman, PGA Assistant Professional at Westwood Country Club (Vienna, Va.) as their 2012 Player of the Year. This is Hoffman’s third APA Player of the Year (POY) honor since joining the Middle Atlantic Section in 2006.
Playing in seven of the eight APA events this year, Hoffman’s sole APA win came at the kick-off event in April which was held at Spring Creek Golf Club (Zion Crossroads, VA). In his next six events, Hoffman continued to earn points, keeping him in the hunt for Player of the Year. Before the final event of the season, the APA Championship, Hoffman was in second place in the POY points race; just 33 points behind the leader Jaime Gylan, PGA Apprentice at Raspberry Falls Golf & Hunt Club. To Hoffman’s surprise, Gylan did not play in the APA Championship due to the expecting arrival of his first child and Hoffman finished in a tie for fifth place. This finish earned Hoffman 100 additional points which was enough to take the lead by 49 points.
Hoffman, who is also a new father, is honored to receive this recognition and owes a lot of his achievement to his PGA Mentor, Joy Bonhurst, a teaching professional at ClubGolf in Gaithersburg, Md. “Her guidance has been a big part in me reaching my goals,” states Hoffman. “I’m also grateful to have support from my wife, friends and family members.”
