Alabama Theatre Show for Pardue Children in Need Fund directly supports area kids

(MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.) – Mystical Golf, owner and operator of the three acclaimed Grand Strand courses, announces legendary entertainer Ben Vereen will perform a benefit concert with the Long Bay Symphony for its “Pardue Children in Need Fund” at the Alabama Theatre in North Myrtle Beach, Jan. 25 beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Few entertainers are as accomplished and versatile as Vereen. For over 40 years, he has performed countless one-man shows around the globe. He was the first simultaneous winner of the “Entertainer of the Year,” “Rising Star,” and “Song and Dance Star” awards from the American Guild of Variety Artists (AGVA). In 2012, he was inducted into the Theater Hall of Fame.

On Broadway, he has appeared in Wicked, Fosse, I’m Not Rappaport, Hair, Jesus Christ Superstar, Pippin, Grind, Jelly’s Last Jam and A Christmas Carol. His performance in Pippin garnered him both the prestigious Tony Award and the Drama Desk Award for “Best Actor in a Musical.”

“Ben’s incredible humanity and amazing talent epitomizes the true meaning of being a ‘superstar,'” says Claude Pardue, President and CEO of Mystical Golf. “Not only will he be bringing joy to those in attendance at the Alabama Theater, he’ll be helping our area children find joy in their lives.”

As with Mystical Golf’s annual Christmas Child Golf Tournament, all concert proceeds directly benefit young people at the Lighthouse Care Center of Conway, S.C. and Lighthouse Care Center of Augusta, Ga., as well as the McDonald’s Angel Tree project. Since 2003, more than $114,000 has been generated.

The Lighthouse facilities care for children from the ages of 12-17 suffering from behavioral disorders. Funds generated provide activities as rewards for good conduct. They include a trip to Carowinds Amusement Park, monthly movie screenings, bowling, putt-putt golf, Carolina College football games and an annual trip to the Alabama Theatre Christmas Show. Additionally, as a Christmas gift, kids are presented with a new pair of shoes of their own choosing.
