EUROPEAN TOUR / CHRIS WOOD
Commercial Bank Qatar Masters: Titleist Pro V1x golf ball, Titleist 735CM 2-iron
Titleist Pro V1x golf ball loyalist Chris Wood earned his first European Tour title in style, capturing the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters with a dramatic eagle on the 72nd hole.
The 25-year old Englishman came to the par five home hole one shot behind two players, including Titleist Brand Ambassador George Coetzee (New 2013 Pro V1x, 913D3 driver, 909F2 fairway metal, 712U prototype 3-utility iron, CB/MB irons, Vokey Design SM4 gap, sand and lob wedges). The tee had been moved forward 55 yards, and after a booming drive, Wood hit a 202-yard six iron over the water and straight at the flag. His Pro V1x finished ten feet from the hole, which he converted for his first career win after three runner-up finishes. Wood earned his first professional victory at last year’s Thailand Open on the Asian Tour.
“There’s an enormous weight lifted off my shoulders today,” he said. “I feel like I can go on and win more. I knew it was going to be hard no matter how I played – winning on The European Tour is not easy. I’ve been knocking on the door in previous times and it’s not happened. To get it today, to get my first win, it’s such an honor. I’m so pleased. I felt like I was due to win for a couple of years. It was a nice way to finish!”
His closing 69 gave him an 18-under par, 270 victory total. Coetzee, meanwhile, fired a final round 65 that included an eagle and six birdies, the last of which tied him for the clubhouse lead. He then sat and watched Wood’s final hole heroics.
