(Grand Rapids, Mich.) Celebrating its Silver Anniversary, the West Michigan Golf Show compiled this Top Ten list of its greatest “hits” since 1989. This year’s show will be held Feb. 8-10 at the DeVos Place in downtown Grand Rapids. Drum roll, please, for:
1. At his indoor clinic at the inaugural WMGS, National Long Drive Champion Evan “Big Cat” Williams drives a golf ball through a phone book. Hank Haney, later a teacher for Tiger Woods, also gives clinics at this first Golf Show. (1989)
2. Show attendee Tom Deane makes an ace at the fully landscaped indoor Par-3 hole inside the Welsh Auditorium and wins a two-year lease on a new Cadillac Escalade. (2003)
3. Treetops’ acclaimed teaching pro Rick Smith packs the seats for his clinics and to tout his newest course design, Arcadia Bluffs. (1999)
4. Rockford (Mich.) native Todd Anderson returns to the Show as the current National PGA Teacher of the Year. PGA Tour star Brandt Snedeker is one of his students. (2011)
5. It’s SRO for golfers listening to clinics by Jim Flick, legendary golf instructor and esteemed teacher of Tour players, including Jack Nicklaus. (2005) (NOTE: Flick was scheduled to appear at the 2013 Show until he passed away in November.)
6. West Michigan Golf Show moves into the state-of-the-art DeVos Place. (2004)
7. Elaine Crosby, a top LPGA Tour player from Jackson (MI), is the first female headliner. (1991)
8. Mike Bender, the reigning National PGA Teacher of the Year, is the Show’s headliner. Former Masters champion Zach Johnson is one of his pupils. (2009)
9. Dr. Deborah Graham, whose client list includes Ryder Cup Captain Dave Stockton, is the first sports psychologist as a Show headliner (1997)
10. West Michigan Golf Show leaves the Ford Fieldhouse after a 12-year run for the more spacious Grand Center. (2002)
