‘Governor’s Cup’ awarded for annual Myrtle Beach event’s economic impact, charitable contributions

(MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.) – Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday announces its annual GOLF.com World Amateur Handicap Championship received the Governor’s Cup – the state’s top tourism award – at the Governor’s Conference on Tourism & Travel held at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center.

Now in its 30th year, last year’s event generated an estimated 20,000 room nights, 18,000 rounds of golf and $5 million in economic impact. It additionally has raised thousands of dollars for charitable organizations over the years.

Participants included more than 3,100 competitors from 49 U.S. states and 25 countries including China, India, Japan, Australia, England, France, Germany, Italy, Sweden, South Africa and Canada.

The tournament also showcases “The World’s Largest 19th Hole” – a vast golf exposition held each evening at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center and enjoyed by tournament players and their guests. It includes equipment demos, entertainment, celebrity appearances, open bars, concerts, prize drawings and food from area restaurants.

“This coveted award speaks to the longevity and sense of community that makes the World Am one of great celebrations of amateur golf,” says Bill Golden, president of Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday. “For our 30th anniversary, we want to raise the bar by making the event bigger and more fun while showcasing Myrtle Beach as one of the world’s premier golf vacation destinations.”
