Roscommon, MI – Forest Dunes Golf Club, the nationally acclaimed Tom Weiskopf-designed golf course in northern Michigan, has once again earned a spot among Golf Digest’s elite list of America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses. The premier golf course also earned status as the No. 2 rated public course in the state of Michigan.
The publication’s biennial review of America’s top public courses appears in the February 2013 issue. Golf Digest used over 1,100 members of its Course Ranking Panel and asked each to submit ballots based on seven criteria including shot values, resistance to scoring, design variety, memorability, aesthetics, conditioning, and ambience.
“We are very excited to once again be recognized by one of the leading golf publications and rater panels in the industry as one of America’s 100 greatest public courses”, said Todd Campbell, general manager at Forest Dunes Golf Club. “To continue being rated among the best in the country is a testament to the quality design that Tom Weiskopf developed, together with our service and staff, especially our superintendent and the world-class conditions we continue to maintain.”
Forest Dunes Golf Club, which opened in 2002, was ranked No. 23 among the Top 100 list and was the No. 4 overall rated course in Michigan, No. 2 public. The course joins eight other Michigan courses that made the prestigious list including Arcadia Bluffs (10), Tullymore (45), Bay Harbor (65), Black Lake G.C. (69), The Bear at Grand Traverse Resort (72), The Heather at Boyne Highlands (73) and Elk Ridge (95).
Forest Dunes Golf Club was designed by former British Open winner Tom Weiskopf who has said that Forest Dunes is in the top three among his designs in the United States. The 7,116-yard course, with five sets of tees including junior tees, is cut through the beautiful Huron National Forest.
The course is unlike any other in northern Michigan. The front nine features parkland-style holes meandering through corridors of red and jack pines, with elaborate bunkering and sandy waste areas on the sides. The back nine is quite different, featuring even more open and exposed rugged native sand areas with scruffy underbrush bordering and crossing fairways and greens.
The property also features one of the premier practice facilities in the U.S., featuring a double-ended range with contoured fairways and greens, a well-designed short game area and putting green. It is also home to the popular Kendall/Seltzer Golf Getaway School.
New for 2013 is the opening of the new Lake AuSable Lodge scheduled for April. The new lodge will reflect the same Adirondack architectural theme as the nearby golf clubhouse, using hardwoods, cedar shake siding and stone on the exterior. The lodge will feature 14 rooms and suites, which will overlook scenic Lake AuSable and the No. 1 tee of the Forest Dunes golf course.
The new lodge enables Forest Dunes to offer a variety of stay-and-play packages combining its award winning golf with the new lodge rooms, as well as the existing cottages. The new golf packages, which start at $149 per night, can be customized to include golf, lodging in either the lodge or cottages, and meals.
