Nothing is more frustrating than compounding the problem of landing in a greenside bunker after botching up a fairway shot only to wind up adding several more strokes with your sand wedge. It’s no secret that many golfers not only have a fear of the sand, but it’s usually accompanied by strong resentment and a lingering uncertainty about using a sand iron.
The short game is a major cause of most poor golf scores. Many short game shots require the use of a wedge like a sand wedge and many golfers do not practice with their wedges so they can take that knowledge to the course. There is a learning curve necessary with wedges whether it is a traditional type or new technology in a hybrid sand wedge.
Due to the difficulty of most short game shots golfers are usually perplexed by how to handle their sand wedge with savvy, rather than with power. Here are a few tips to improve your pitching and chipping:
If You End Up With A Bunker Shot
As we all know no two bunker shots are the same, this is where finesse comes into play with your sand wedge. If the bunker has a tall lip, then your carry through needs to finish much higher than when you are in a bunker with a more shallow lip. If you find that the sand is very fluffy and thick it would be best to open the face a little and use the bounce of the club to slide under the ball with a carry through out in front of you, rather than finishing low. If it is hard, pan sand, make sure your hands lead through the shot so the leading edge will dig into the sand just behind the ball with a carry through out in front of your body.
Shots from the Rough
First look at the whole situation when your ball is in the rough. Do not rush into the shot without having the specific spot on the green that you want the ball to land. Most importantly you want to watch the club face make contact with the ball. Looking up too fast is what causes chunking and hitting shots too thin and off line. You want to focus on the distance necessary with your swing.
The modern sand wedge was designed for more than just shots from the bunker. It can be your go to golf club for any short game shot from 50 to 100 yards onto the green depending on your strength. A smooth swing is worth more than trying to overpower any club.
