Pete Dye, Donald Ross, and Sultan’s Run ranked No 1, 2, and 8 respectively
French Lick, IN – French Lick Resort, located in southern Indiana, has had three of its golf courses ranked in the Top 10 among Golfweek’s 2013 “Best You Can Play” State by State rankings in Indiana.
The award winning Pete Dye Course has once again been selected the No. 1 course in the state and the resorts historic Donald Ross Course was also ranked No. 2 on the state list again. New for 2013, the Sultan’s Run Course, a French Lick managed property, has been ranked No. 8 on the list.
These latest accolades, ranking three of the resorts courses among the top in the state, appeared in the March 8, 2013 issue of the leading national publication. Golfweek’s course evaluators submit ballots grading courses all over the country on a 10-point scale to determine the country’s finest golf courses. Raters take into account factors such as routing of the course, feature shaping, greens, variety and memorable holes, conditioning, maintenance, and landscape management.
“We are very honored to be recognized by Golfweek Magazine and having three of our courses ranked No.1, 2, and 8 in the state of Indiana,” said Dave Harner, French Lick Resort’s director of golf. “These rankings and the quality golf we offer continue to solidify French Lick Resort as one of the elite golf resort destinations in the country.”
The Pete Dye course is regarded as one of the most breathtaking and exciting 18 holes of golf in the country. The course was carefully carved on a dramatic hilltop offering a variety of elevation changes, rugged and dramatic terrain, narrow fairways and challenging bunkers. There are spectacular views from every hole, some that stretch for over 40 miles.
Complimenting the award winning Pete Dye course, is the recently restored Donald Ross course, a parkland gem meandering up and down the rolling hills a few miles from the main resort. The wonderful routing of the holes take full advantage of the many elevation points for the classic Ross greens which slope dramatically from back to front. It is one of only two public Ross courses in the state of Indiana and played host to the 1924 PGA Championship won by Walter Hagen.
In 2011 French Lick Resort assumed management responsibilities for Sultan’s Run golf course in nearby Jasper, Indiana, which has assisted in elevating the courses stature in the state. Sultan’s Run opened in 1992 and was designed by Tim Liddy, a former disciple of Pete Dye. A former Top 10 course in Indiana, the course stretches over 224 acres, which was the former home of the legendary horse Supreme Sultan, who sired a record number of World Champion American Saddlebred horses. The course plays host to the Indiana Southern Open and is a qualifying site for the United Leasing Web.com event.
“Sultan’s Run has come a long way through the owners commitment to capital projects and the community’s support of the effort through event participation and general encouragement,” explains Harner. “The course has been a welcome addition allowing us to now offer four championship golf options with a variety for all different levels of players.”
The Pete Dye Course has been on the national radar having hosting the 2010 PGA of America’s Professionals National Championship, the Big Ten Men’s and Women’s Championships in 2012, 2013, 2014, Indiana Open in 2012, and will be hosting the LPGA Legends Championships in 2013.
