Hilton Head gem also a nominee for annual NGCOA honor
(HILTON HEAD, S.C.) — The Sea Pines Resort’s Heron Point by Pete Dye – the ideal complement 18 to iconic Harbour Town Golf Links — was named the 2013 “Course of the Year” by the Lowcountry Golf Course Owners Association.
As a result of this prestigious recognition, Heron Point was also a nominee for the National Golf Course Owner’s Association (NGCOA) “Course of the Year” award at its annual conference in San Diego. The NGCOA honors courses within each of its chapters and affiliate areas that epitomize exceptional course quality, management excellence and make important contributions to their communities and the game.
Opened in 2007, Heron Point is resplendent with knotted hardwoods, lagoons and salt marshes teeming with wildlife. Like Harbour Town, Mother Nature provided an ideal palette for Dye’s legendary design prowess. The site was once occupied by the former Sea Marsh course. Rather than simply renovate the 1960s George Cobb layout, Dye received carte blanche to create an entirely new golf course using the existing routing.
At just over 7,000 yards from the back tees Heron Point is a synthesis of short and long holes. Golfers are challenged by numerous risk-reward decisions, fairways flowing toward and away from hazards, and Dye’s ubiquitous mounding framing target areas. The 18 is replete with his now signature railroad ties edging greens and bunkers.
“It’s extremely gratifying to see Heron Point receive both regional and national acclaim as a premier layout,” says Cary Corbitt, Vice President of Sports & Operations at Sea Pines Resort. “It joins classic Harbour Town Golf Links to give us two Pete Dye masterpieces for our members and guests to enjoy,”
