ORLANDO, Fla. (April 12, 2013) – Golfweek, the most authentic, authoritative and independent voice in golf, celebrates the golf architecture of The Great White North with today’s release of the third-annual Golfweek’s Best Canadian Courses list. Golfweek’s April 12 issue not only presents the rankings of Canada’s finest Modern and Classic courses, but also delivers an up-close look at the country’s most esteemed golf course architects.
“This year – along with recognizing Canada’s Best golf courses – we’re also featuring Canada’s greatest golf course architect, Stanley Thompson,” said Bradley S. Klein, national director of the Golfweek’s Best rating program. “Having designed 16 of the top 40 classic courses in Canada, Thompson is something of a national treasure.”
Claiming the top spot on the 2013 Classic list, the Thompson-designed Jasper Park Lodge (Jasper, Alberta) surpassed last year’s headliner St. George’s Golf and Country Club (Islington, Ontario), which is also a Thompson design. Meanwhile impressive newcomers Burlington Golf and Country Club (Burlington, Ontario) and Cherry Hill Club (Ridgeway, Ontario) joined the list at No. 32 and No. 34, respectively.
On the Modern side, Devil’s Paintbrush (Caledon, Ontario) maintained its top ranking, followed by Cabot Links Golf Course (Inverness, Nova Scotia), a Rod Whitman-designed layout that debuted at No. 2 after its recent opening in 2012. Accompanying Cabot Links Golf Course as new additions to the Modern list are Magna Golf Club (Aurora, Ontario) at No. 38 and London Hunt and Country Club (London, Ontario) at No. 40.
To produce Golfweek’s Best Courses lists, an expert team of nearly 750 course raters uses a 10-point ranking system to identify the best layouts from two distinctly different eras: pre-1960 and 1960-present. The exclusive system recognizes that before 1960 – the year that separates Classic from Modern – most course designers relied on native contours for course features. Since 1960, as the game became more popular, designers began to utilize high-tech engineering and advanced mechanical means to transform the landscape to suit their designs.
