(VIENNA, VA) – Billy Casper Golf (BCG) – the largest domestic owner-operator of golf courses, country clubs and resorts – has been selected by Canton Township to manage Fellows Creek Golf Club in Canton, MI.
BCG will provide turnkey management of Fellows Creek’s operations, golf course and property maintenance, sales, marketing and public relations, staffing and training, merchandising, restaurant and banquet activities, special events, golf instruction and financial management.
“Billy Casper Golf has an excellent reputation for taking municipally-owned golf courses to the next level,” says Phil LaJoy, Supervisor of Canton Township. “Its focus on creating memorable guest experiences as well as overall management philosophy spoke to our needs.”
“With 27 challenging holes and top-notch clubhouse, Fellows Creek is poised for growth,” says Peter Hill, Chairman and CEO of BCG. “The Billy Casper Golf difference will be realized by golfers and Canton Township in the short and long term.”
BCG will enact its proprietary “BCGreen” initiative at Fellows Creek to conserve, protect and enhance the environment, and enroll the course in the Audubon International “Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary” program. The result is increased efficiencies in maintenance, energy, water, pesticides, fertilizer, equipment wear and labor.
With three varied nine-hole layouts – South, East and West – Fellows Creek presents 27 exciting holes. Co-designed by one of Michigan’s most renowned golf-course architects, W. Bruce Matthews, and his son, Jerry Matthews, golfers combine two different nine-hole settings to create unique 18-hole, par-72 rounds.
The South Nine has more rolling terrain than the other nines and is also known for its elevation changes. The 208-yard, par-3 No. 9 was chosen by the Detroit Free-Press as one of the “Toughest 18 Holes in Southeast Michigan.” The uphill tee shot to the green is nerve-racking and a creek running on the right from tee to green further quickens pulses of even the most experienced golfers. Come up short and face a downhill lie – if the ball doesn’t kick to the right and into the water.
On the East Nine, par-5 No. 3 appears to be a tempting risk-reward, but it more of a gamble than meets the eye. Measuring 512 yards from the back tees, it is protected by trees on the left for the first 100 yards. A fairway bunker on the right can prevent golfers from going for the green in two. The well-protected two-tiered green has a pond on the right and bunkers on both sides.
The popular par-4 No. 2 on the West Nine is a short, reachable hole at 298 from the tips. Golfers are tempted to pull driver and go for the green in one, but should exercise caution considering the tree-lined fairway. A creek crossing roughly 60 yards short of the green and bunkers on the left pose additional obstacles.
A recently renovated, spacious clubhouse is home to a fully-stocked pro shop, restaurant and elegant yet comfortable banquet space for up to 300 guests. Showcasing views of the surrounding golf course through large windows, Fellows Creek is the perfect spot for weddings, corporate outings and other social engagements.
