ORLANDO, Fla. (May 9, 2013) – With the amateur golf season kicking into high gear, Golfweek will once again pay tribute to the dedicated golfers who play for the sheer love of the game with tomorrow’s release of its 14th annual Amateur Issue. As the longtime leader in amateur golf, Golfweek will take readers inside the amateur landscape, introducing them to some of the game’s top amateurs and competitors through a series of exclusive features.
“Covering the amateur game with great depth and passion is part of the essence of who we are,” said Golfweek Editor Jeff Babineau. “Before Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Phil Mickelson and Stacy Lewis were rising to the top of the pro game, they were competing at a high level as amateurs, and we were there to cover them. Publishing the Amateur Issue each spring always marks a big highlight of our year, and we hope readers will enjoy what we’re delivering as a new season gets ready to heat up.”
Highlights of Golfweek’s 2013 Amateur Issue include:
• An in-depth look at how the USGA’s new mid-amateur mandate for two Walker Cup spots will affect the upcoming season for top 25-and-older players
• Top players to watch for the U.S. and GB&I Walker Cup teams
• Profiles of England’s Neil Raymond, a candidate for the GB&I Walker Cup squad, and Todd White, a high school teacher and mid-am from South Carolina
• A human interest story about Hawaii’s Chris Adam, an ice-cream parlor owner on Maui who played an amazing 850 rounds in 2012
• An engaging feature about longtime amateur Meghan Stasi, who has won the past four U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur titles
• An annual salute to local legends from around the country who have impressive credentials and interesting stories to tell
Keeping with the amateur theme, this special issue also recognizes municipal golf courses – which often serve as a proving ground for golfers at every level – with the release of the 2013 Golfweek’s Best Municipal Courses list. Recognizing the nation’s top 50 government-owned courses, this year’s rankings feature Bethpage State Park’s Black Course (Farmingdale, N.Y.), Chambers Bay (University Place, Wash.) and Butterfield Trail Golf Club (El Paso, Texas) topping the list once again.
