Selected as one of only 33 courses nationwide
(DALLAS, TX) – Bear Creek Golf Club – managed by Billy Casper Golf – will host the 2013 United States Golf Association Women’s Amateur Public Links Qualifier on Wednesday, May 29.
The 18-hole, stroke-play tournament will be contested among approximately 40 golfers with the top four finishers advancing to the championship tournament, June 17-22 in Norman, OK. Bear Creek was selected as one of only 33 golf courses across America and two in Texas to host a qualifying competition.
“It’s a mark of distinction and credit for Bear Creek to be selected by the USGA to host this important amateur competition,” says Scott Davey, General Manager of Bear Creek. “The course is in outstanding condition and will offer a fair, but difficult test for all golfers.”
Bear Creek Golf Club features one of the Dallas / Fort Worth-area’s favorite golf courses. Designed by distinguished course architect Ted Robinson and spread over 36 holes of championship-caliber golf, Bear Creek boasts two distinct layouts – the par-72, 6,670-yard East Course and par-72, 6,690-yard West Course – which challenge golfers of all skill levels.
Named among the “Top 50 Resort Courses in America” by Golf Digest and one of the “10 Great Places to Golf” by The Wall Street Journal, Bear Creek’s challenge, allure and shot values have led to hosting PGA TOUR Qualifiers, the Texas State Open, the American Junior Golf Association National Tournament, the PGA National Golf Series and Northern Texas PGA Sectional Tournaments.
Since its inception in 1922, the U.S. Amateur Public Links has given exposure to many public-course players who otherwise might not have an opportunity to compete in a national championship. The competition is open to any bona fide public-course player whose USGA Handicap Index does not exceed 4.4. The Amateur Public Links is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the USGA, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.
The first U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship was contested in 1977 at Yahara Hills Golf Course (East Course) in Madison, WI with Kelly Fuiks crowned champion. That inaugural championship attracted a field of 686 players, more than the combined fields of the 1977 Women’s Amateur, Women’s Open, Senior Women’s Amateur, and Girls’ Junior. Past champions include current LPGA TOUR stars Yani Tseng and Michelle Wie.
