Claims second title in five weeks and moves to world No. 7
(Londonderry, NH) – Danish brand ECCO – a leading global manufacturer of innovative footwear – confirms that Staff Player Graeme McDowell wore its luxurious World Class GTX golf shoes en route to winning the Volvo World Match Play Championship this past weekend at Thracian Cliffs Golf & Beach Resort in Kavarna, Bulgaria.
Showcasing the ECCO logo on his headwear, G-Mac faced off in the final against fellow staff player and five-time European Tour champion Thongchai Jaidee. The tournament’s top-ranked player, McDowell fell two down after four holes before rallying on the back side to seal a 2-and-1 victory. With the win – his second in five weeks after the RBC Heritage – the 33-year-old moved to No. 7 on the Official World Golf Ranking and surged to the top of The Race to Dubai.
“The list of champions – Els, Montgomerie, Westwood, Ballesteros, Norman, Lyle, Faldo, Player, Palmer – it’s just crazy stuff really and to have your name on a trophy this cool is pretty special,” said McDowell. “I’ll drink a couple of cold ones tonight and enjoy this special moment in my career.”
A distinctive leather-soled golf shoe, World Class GTX combines traditional craftsmanship with modern performance technologies. Its rich leather uppers are waterproof via a GORE-TEX® membrane, while an ECCO Second Skin lining and insole promote superior comfort, cushioning and climate control.
“Both Graeme and Thongchai really played well this week, and it was pretty special for us to watch two of our players going head to head in the final,” says Jesper Thuen, Global Sponsorship, PR & Event Manager – ECCO Golf. “G-Mac’s on an absolute roll right now and you’ve got to like his chances to pick up some more titles this season.”
In addition to McDowell and Jaidee, the ECCO men’s golf collection is worn in competition by scores of international Tour stars, including Fred Couples, Thomas Bjørn, Stuart Appleby, Andreas Hartø, Wu Ashun, JB Hansen and many others.
