Good people are hard to find and this is a universally accepted fact. The club industry in the Asia Pacific is faced with a major challenge in finding good people and an even harder time trying to keep them.
So, how do clubs handle this challenge? For the answers, the 2013 Asia Pacific Golf Summit, which opens in Jakarta on November 5 – 7, has signed on Chris A Wootten, Managing Director of International Leisure Consultants and chief executive officer of The Golf Group Asia.
“Many managers are motivators, developers, friends, mentors and great leaders of people, however to others the subject of human resources is a time consuming headache, unrewarding frustration and one best left to the HR department to administer and develop,” explained Wootten.
According to him, HR philosophy, selection, profiling, hiring, reference checks, orientation, training, team building, assessment, incentives and performance rewards, structured communication or a simple chat, staff facilities, uniforms, entertainment, empowerment, initiative, goal setting, coaching and counseling, teamwork, smiling, fun, character, personality, friendship and so forth may be words that excite a General Manager or they may not regularly appear in a vocabulary or plan.
“Whichever style is followed, a club’s personnel can make or break a property and the answers to success or struggle may be both in front of your eyes and a readily available asset. A focus on back of house may result in the front of house blossoming,” declared Wootten.
Make a date to attend APGS 2013 and listen to how you can harness the thoughts of an expert in hiring quality staff and keeping them with.
