LAKE MARY, FL (August 19, 2013) – Timacuan Golf & Country Club’s summer-long greens restoration project is nearing completion, with an unveiling date of Labor Day Weekend approaching.
According to the course’s designer Ron Garl, the project is right on target.
“They have done a great job here with the new greens,” said Garl during a visit last week. “These greens are better right now than established greens at most other courses in the area. Superintendent Brandon Sims and his staff are to be commended.”
The project started in late May, when the greens were sprayed with herbicides. That was followed by verticutting and aerification of the grass. In mid-June the greens were fumigated and covered for a week. After top-dressing, the soil was treated, then the surfaces was sprigged with Mini-Verde. Since then the surfaces have been lightly top-dressed to help hold in the moisture, and irrigated regularly.
The final touch was the sodding of the fringes, which occurred two weeks ago.
“We’re real happy with the greens at this point,” said Sims. “It is hard to believe how quickly the greens can come in. We are at the six-week mark and they are pretty much full.”
Garl agreed.
“These greens could be played on right now,” said Garl. “And many course owners would do just that after months of little revenue. But Jack and Claire (Zhang) are doing it the right way. They are making sure these greens are completely grown in and settled before opening them up to the rigors of golfers walking and playing on them.”
The maintenance staff has also been busy with other areas of the golf course. Several tee boxes were re-sodded, as were a few bare areas in the fairways and rough.
The final result will be a plush golf course that will bring smiles to the membership and the daily fee play.
“I think golfers will be very pleased with the golf course,” said General Manager Dale Lafferty. “Once our new greens are in play, we will be going great lengths to keep them at a consistently quick speed. Our goal is to bring Timacuan back to the standing it earned in the early days.”
Timacuan has been among the most popular courses in Central Florida since opening in 1988. It has been ranked as high as No. 14 in Florida. U.S. Open champion Graeme McDowell is among its fans.
“I really enjoyed the golf course,” said McDowell, after playing in the $10,000 Timacuan Scramble in January. “It is a great layout with a links-like feel to it. It can be testy in places if you get off the beaten path, but it is a very fair course.”
