A.C. Wong, or popularly known as just “AC” has been associated with golf since 1988 and in the quarter century that he has been with golf, he has created quite an impressive track record. Impressive enough for him to be awarded the 2013 Asia Pacific Golf Group LifeTime Achievement in Golf.
The Singaporean first hit the limelight in 1988 when he became the captain of Jurong Country Club in Singapore. He held this appointment up to 2006 during which time, he master-minded a multi-million dollar project to light up the club’s course for night golf. It was during this tenure that A.C. discovered and nurtured Singapore’s favourite professional golfer Mardan Mamat and supported him on his journey to become one of the region’s top golfers.
He served with the Singapore Golf Association as his club’s representative from 1988 to 2006 and in this time, he took over the reins of the youth development council and was the captain and manager of the national team to the South East Asian Games, the World Cup in Canada and the Putra Cup and the Asian Games in Hiroshima, Japan.
Another feather in his cap was the leadership role that he played as organizing chairman of the Singapore Open which went on to become one of the richest professional golf events in Asia.
A.C. was the founding father of the Asian PGA and was the deputy chairman and chairman of this organization for a period of seven years. In 2006, he became a founding member of ASEAN PGA and under his leadership, the tour has grown to 12 events offering total prize money of US$1.2 million. The ASEAN PGA has held tournaments in Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, Vietnam and Laos and has assisted in forming the Vietnam Golf Association and the Brunei Darussalam PGA.
He most definitely is a very deserving winner of the Asia Pacific LifeTime Achievement Award. He has given a lot of his time and his personal resources to grow the game of golf on all fronts – the amateur game, junior golf and the professional game over a sustained period extending over 25 years.
A.C. will receive his award at APGS 2013 on November 6 in Jakarta. If you have not registered yet to attend APGS, you can Register On-line NOW!
