Stafford, Va. – The Middle Atlantic PGA is pleased to announce that four courses in its Section are ranked in Golfweek magazine’s Best Campus Courses for 2013. The list was recently published in Golfweek’s September 6, 2013 issue.
Leading the pack of Middle Atlantic courses at number 14 is the Pete Dye River Course at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va. Built by Dye in 2005, the VA Tech course has been a fixture on the list since 2010 and made the top ten in 2011 and 2012.
Number 18 on the list is the U.S. Naval Academy Golf Club in Annapolis, Md. One of the oldest courses on the list (built in 1942), the U.S. Naval Academy Golf Club was designed by William Flynn who, as a youngster, competed against fellow New Englander Francis Ouimet and who also designed championship courses like Shinnecock Hills Golf Club on Long Island and Cherry Hills Country Club in Colorado.
Holding the 26th spot on the list is University of Virginia’s Birdwood course in Charlottesville, Va. This Lindsay Ervin design not only boasts breath-taking playing terrain, but also offers a state-of-the-art short game facility that was named in honor of UVA alum and stand-out amateur golfer Lew Oehmig.
Rounding out the Middle Atlantic list of courses at number 28 is the University of Maryland (UMD) Golf Course in College Park, Md. which was a new arrival to the list in 2012. UMD Golf Course’s original architect, George W. Cobb, was most famous for his design of the Par 3 Course at Augusta National, home of the “Par 3 Challenge” during the week of the Masters Tournament. In 2003, Audubon International named UMD’s golf course a “Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary” and in 2008, the course underwent a $3.5M renovation lead by local architect William R. Love.
