NOVI, MI – It was another nail-biting finish at the iconic Wentworth Club in Surrey, England on Sunday at the DP World Tour’s flagship event, the 2024 BMW PGA Championship. 2THUMB putter grip ambassador and South African professional closed with a 65 posting a total 20 under par in regulation to take the lead in the clubhouse while watching PGA TOUR Champions, Rory McIlroy and Billy Horschel closing in from behind on the final holes.
The South African and four-time DP World winner, was five shots off the lead when the round started, carding seven birdies including a 26-footer on the 16th hole. He failed to birdie either of the two closing par fives which opened the door for Horschel and McIlroy, who were in pursuit.
McIlroy holed a remarkable 40-footer on the 17th for eagle to tie the lead but missed a a 15 ft chip on the 18thfor the outright win. Horschel, who was playing alongside McIlroy, holed out for birdie on 18 to force a three-way playoff.
The South African, who is ranked 46 in the OWGR, exited the first playoff hole after hitting a poor drive wide right, and a water ball approaching the green, making bogey. Horschel drained an eagle putt when they replayed the 18th to claim victory over McIlroy on the second playoff hole.
“It just shows the standard out here,” said McIlroy. “If you slip up just a little bit or don’t make a birdie on a crucial hole, someone is always waiting to take advantage of that.”

The 27-year-old Lawrence is from Kempton, South Africa. He turned pro in 2014 and became a member of the DP World Tour in 2021 with avictory at the Joburg Open. He is currently ranked second for the 2024 Race to Dubai behind McIlroy.
