For most of the golfers in the country, winter time usually means hanging up the clubs for the season and waiting until spring rolls back around. However, if you live in San Diego, the situation is a bit different. Winter time can mean colder temperatures and a chance of rain but that does not stop Future Champions Golf from hosting one of the largest and most prestigious junior golf events in the country. For these reasons, junior golfers from all over the country travel to San Diego in January to play in this event.
With over 390 players in the field at the 6th Annual San Diego Junior Amateur, it is one of the most competitive fields that can be found throughout the year. With competitive fields, come great champions. Past Champions include: Chris Williams (Former Walker Cup Member and #1 Ranked Amateur in the World), Todd Baek (Web.com Tour Player), Beau Hossler (Univ. of Texas and Two-Time US Open Participant) and Jonah Texeira (USC commit). Along with having one of the most competitive fields of the year, the San Diego Junior Amateur is one of the most heavily recruited junior golf events. In 2013, there were coaches from 17 different colleges represented at the tournament and we expect that number to grow in 2014.
This year, Future Champions Golf has added Salt Creek Golf Club as an additional course for the Boys 15-18 division. “Salt Creek Golf Club is nestled in the rolling foothills of the San Miguel Mountains adjacent to a National Wildlife Refuge. It is an award winning links-style course designed to flow with the natural terrain of the land. The generous fairways and large greens provide a demanding yet playable golf experience where you will likely hit all the clubs in your bag.” Players in the Boys 15-18 division will play one round at Steele Canyon Golf Club & one round at Salt Creek Golf Club, a cut will be made and the final round will be held at Steele Canyon Golf Club.
Also new this year is FCG’s relationship with VISION54. Kristine Reese and Tiffany Yager will be hosting a learning seminar on the range at Sycuan Golf Resort on Jan. 2nd at 3:30pm. “By bringing this refreshing and evolutionary outlook to the experience of learning, practicing, coaching and playing the game of golf VISION54 presents a clear and defined path that allows each golfer to identify and reach their full potential.” This will be a great opportunity for players to learn more about their mental game and understand how they can be successful in the game of golf.
