National Guardsman Michael McVeigh, with Help from Classmates, Speeds Around Brookhaven Country Club on Veterans Day
November 13, 2013, Farmers Branch, Texas — After playing 198 holes in eight hours on Veterans Day, beginning at the crack of dawn, Michael McVeigh showed little, if any, signs of weariness. No sweat – his clothes were wet only from a champagne shower by fellow veterans who had helped him get around Brookhaven Country Club’s President’s Course at the amazing clip of 2½ minutes per hole.
“I feel great – let’s play some more,” said the 33-year-old McVeigh, a student at Golf Academy of America’s Dallas campus, who saw tours of duty in Somalia and Iraq. “Come on, let’s go.”
McVeigh, with his helpers, who had a ball teed and waiting at every tee box, and collected every made putt as McVeigh raced to the next tee, smashed the goal of 11 hours.
“If anybody was going to do this it was going to be Michael,” said Golf Academy of America Dallas campus director Greg Gossett, who also assisted McVeigh on the course. “He has a lot of determination.”
The event raised awareness and funds for Salute Military Golf Association (SMGA), a non-profit organization providing rehabilitative golf experiences and family-inclusive golf opportunities for post-9/11 wounded war veterans.
McVeigh, a mid-handicapper, estimated he ran about 6 miles, even with a cart. McVeigh made 10 birdies, holed a pitch for eagle during his final round and lost only two balls on the par-72 layout.
“I just want to thank Golf Academy and all of these guys for helping me,” said McVeigh. “It’s an honor for me to be able to do this on Veterans Day.”
