Roscommon, MI – Forest Dunes Golf Club, the nationally acclaimed Tom Weiskopf-designed golf course, is one of Golfweek’s Best Residential Courses in America.
This latest accolade for the Northern Michigan golf course appears in the 2014 edition of Golfweek’s Ultimate Guide to Golf Course Living and Great Escapes, which was published in November.
Forest Dunes, which opened in 2002, was ranked No. 25 among the top 100 residential courses in the nation. It was one of two courses from Michigan recognized on the list. Tullymore Golf Club in Stanwood was ranked No. 93.
“Forest Dunes is a special experience and a wonderful place to live, and we are very excited to be associated with all of these great real-estate developments around the country,” said Todd Campbell, general manager at Forest Dunes. “This recognition continues to solidify us as one of the country’s top golf and second-home destinations.”
Forest Dunes was also highlighted in one of the publication’s feature stories titled “Economy Class: Developers are Seeing Bigger Demands for Smaller Golf Homes.” The story details how developers are rolling back the square footage of secondary homes due to changing consumer finances and the recent recession.
Forest Dunes is used as an example in the story of a golf club that has implemented the business model and it is paying dividends. The story notes that Forest Dunes recently sold three homes in the 1,800-2,400-square-foot range and is building three more of about 2,200 square feet.
Campbell said personal budgets are at the core of the business model choice.
“Consumers are attempting to make their money stretch further, realizing that more is not always best,” he said. “People are using common sense much more now since the recession.”
Forest Dunes Golf Club is unique to Northern Michigan. The front nine features parkland-style holes meandering through corridors of red and jack pines with elaborate bunkering and sandy waste areas on the sides. The back nine is quite different and features open and exposed rugged native sand areas with underbrush bordering and crossing fairways and greens.
