Quincy, Mass. – No avid golfer in history has practiced and enjoyed the game with-out compiling is or her own list of favorite holes. We gather them like jewels and shine through our fondest memories of rounds gone by, and draw us toward rounds to come. That’s why the January-February 2014 edition of GolfGetaways Magazine zeroes in on “101(+) Golf Holes You Gotta Play” this year. It’s a natural theme for golf travelers.
The bi-monthly publication brings together a group of editors and contributors to put forth a list of nearly 150 holes on courses famous and obscure, at destinations just down the road and in North America’s most far-flung yet scenic locales. Iconic holes like the 8th at Pebble Beach and 18th at Harbour Town Golf Links make an appearance; so do lesser-known but equally engaging holes like the 2nd at Highland Links in Eastern Massachusetts, the 12th at La Purisima in Southern California No. 1 at Greywalls in Northern Michigan. In between is a bountiful buffet of par 3s, 4s, 5s and even one par 6, all worthy of a road trip to soak up their singular magic.
“Golfers can argue for hours over the best holes they’ve ever played, and many get passionate in their defense of their favorites,” says Vic Williams, GolfGetaways’ ex-ecutive editor. “With this compilation of descriptions and photos, we’ve taken that popular argument to another level. Our editors and writers have been to every nook and cranny of this continent to feed their golf addiction, and come away with memo-ries of holes that everyone who travels to play the game should know about.”
The issue is now available at Barnes & Noble and other newsstand outlets, as well as by subscription. Williams expects lively social media dialog as readers give their own input on which holes are left out. “That’ll duel us for the next time we do a ‘greatest hole’ rundown,” he adds.
Other issue highlights: Dream golf vacations in Sedona, Ariz., Hilton Head, S.C., and central Minnesota; a tour of California’s Clos do Bois winery with its golf-crazy di-rector of winemaking; and a tasty tour of three events that bring together great food and world-class golf.
GolfGetaways is also available for tablet and other mobile devices and in a new, more interactive format. The app is free for download via Apple’s Newsstand, Ama-zon and Google Play, with each digital edition available for $3.99. The “101 Holes” feature will get special extended coverage in its iPad version.
