French Lick, IN – Brett Fleck, head superintendent on the Donald Ross Course at French Lick Resort, has been honored by the Tri-State Golf Course Superintendents Association (GCSAA) as Superintendent of the Year in 2013. Fleck received the award last month at the annual association holiday party at Rolling Hills Country Club in Newburg, Indiana.
The Tri-State GCSAA, which includes the states of Indiana, Illinois, and Kentucky, selects a superintendent annually by a committee who looks at such things as maintenance practices, and participation within the association. The committee is made up of the previous year’s winner and a group of superintendents in the Tri-state area.
“Brett has done a tremendous job in maintaining the Ross course to the highest standards possible for our guests and is very deserving of this recognition,” said Andy Fortner, head golf professional at the Ross Course. “His standards and passion for the job has made our job so much easier and we are so lucky to have him as part of our team.”
Fleck began his love for golf courses as a young high school student working at Sultans Run golf club in Jasper, Indiana. He decided at that time that this would be his career path and attended college at Rutgers University in New Jersey. Following college he returned home to work at Oakland City Golf Club in Oakland City, Indiana until he was hired at French Lick Resort in 2006.
Fleck began his career at French Lick on the Valley Links during its renovation work by architects Schmidt-Curley. In 2007, following the multi-million dollar renovation that Schmidt-Curley also performed on the Donald Ross Course, Fleck took over as superintendent. Today, he has been a leader among superintendents in the region and his Ross course has been consistently ranked among the top in Indiana and the Midwest.
“It is truly an honor to be selected and recognized by my peers in the industry,” said Fleck. “This award is a reflection of my staff and the golf team at French Lick Resort who allow me to maintain and showcase one of the top golf courses in the country.”
