CHICAGO, IL. (January 18, 2014) – The Freedom Golf Association, an organization founded in 2012 with a primary goal of advancing the delivery of grass roots golf instruction to those with special needs, has hired industry veteran Andy Mears as its director of golf operations.
Mears, a native of Paw Paw, Michigan, has spent 30 years working in many phases of the golf industry. A PGA member, he moved from the club pro ranks in 1992 and has worked in the corporate side of the industry ever since.
His position as Director of Golf Operations for the Freedom Golf Association will have him overseeing a number of duties:
Develop a certified program for Adaptive Golf Instruction
Coordinate instruction efforts with PGA professionals and Amateurs
Organize Events and Clinics
Fundraise for FGA
“This is a very exciting opportunity for me,” said Mears. “To be part of the formative effort of an organization that has such great growth potential, as well as serving such an important role to millions of Americans, is an energizing and inspirational opportunity.”
The Freedom Golf Association plans to accomplish its roll of opening the doors of golf to the special needs community by collaborating and coordinating qualified golf professionals, skilled amateurs, health care professionals and local organizations. Together, the concept is to provide resources to increase the opportunity to bring golf into the lives of the special needs community.
The Freedom Golf Association was founded in July 2012 by Edmund Q. Sylvester. He is a Director of the Western Golf Association and a golf enthusiast. Sylvester became a triple amputee in 2011. Soon after leaving the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, he attempted to hit golf balls at a local range. Without assistance, his attempt was not successful and it became the first step towards forming FGA.
