Devotion to teaching young golfers earns Kay Cornelius award for the third time
Chandler, Ariz. (February 13, 2014) – Ocotillo Golf Resort, located in Chandler, Ariz., is thrilled to announce that its director of instruction, Kay Cornelius, has been named among the “Top 50 Kids Teachers” by U.S. Kids Golf.
Recognizing the world’s most outstanding youth golf instructors, the 2013 class of the Top 50 Kids Teachers included golf professionals from 21 states, Canada, Costa Rica and Mexico, with recipients chosen from a record 747 applicants.
Kay is an LPGA Class A Member and while her passion lies in teaching players of all ages, she has a special gift for teaching junior golfers. Founding the Ocotillo Golf Resort After-School Junior Golf Program nearly 15 years ago, Kay has taught several current and past NCAA Division I collegiate players. She began her involvement with the LPGA/USGA GirlsÌ_å_ Golf Club in 1996 and also directed the Future Stars program from 2001 to 2006. Voted by her peers as the LPGA Section “Teacher of the Year” on two occasions, she has also been nominated as a Golf Magazine “Top 100 Teacher.”
“We truly consider it an honor to have such a dedicated professional on our team who maintains an unwavering focus to growing the game of golf,” stated Mark Bakeman, director of golf, Ocotillo Golf Resort. “Kay has impacted the lives of so many young people, introducing them to a great game and instilling life skills that will benefit them for life.”
This marks the third time that U.S. Kids Golf has recognized Kay as a Top 50 Kids Teacher. Those that receive the Top 50 Kids Teacher Award are honored for their contributions to junior golf, such as: time devoted to teaching young golfers; innovation, creativity and fun in their programs; communication; parental involvement; and overall effort to grow the game. Award recipients include teachers who work at public, private, resort and municipal courses.
