Eight-time Ryder Cup team member brings knowledge, trust to post
(PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla.) – Old Palm Golf Club – the premier private and exclusive residential golf club community in the Palm Beaches – congratulates Honorary Club Chairman Raymond Floyd on his selection as assistant Ryder Cup captain.
Floyd, who resides at Old Palm and designed its acclaimed par 72, 7,401-yard golf course, was selected by U.S. captain Tom Watson to help with this September’s matches in Scotland. He most recently served as a Ryder Cup assistant in 2008 when the U.S. routed the Europeans at Kentucky’s Valhalla G.C.
A four-time major champion and member of the World Golf Hall of Fame, this will be Floyd’s 11th Ryder Cup spanning six decades. In addition to playing on eight teams, he captained the 1989 squad and this recent appointment is his second assistant captainship. He played on the last U.S. team to win on European soil (1993).
“I’m flattered, obviously, and it’s going to be a thrill to have his [Watson’s] back,” says Floyd, the oldest player to ever compete in Ryder Cup as a 51-year-old in 1993. “I think it’ll be a lot of fun.”
Adds Watson: “What Raymond brings here is his experience and respect of the players. When these players look at Raymond, they know he’s been there, they know he’s been successful, and they know he wants to win.”
“Congratulations to Mr. Floyd on his appointment as assistant captain for the 2014 Ryder Cup team,” says Darlene Impellittiere, General Manager of Old Palm Golf Club. “Much more than our Honorary Club Chairman and designer of our golf course, Mr. Floyd is intimately involved with myriad aspects of Old Palm to ensure it remains synonymous with the world’s finest golf clubs.”
Joining Floyd as Old Palm residents are international PGA Tour superstars Louis Oosthuizen, Charl Schwartzel and Lee Westwood. Each touts its exclusivity, gracious neighborhoods, award-winning independent builders and sense of kinship among residents and members. Darren Clarke, 2011 British Open Champion, is also a member and frequently visits Old Palm when his playing schedules permits, where he mingles with his contemporaries and other Old Palm owners.
Old Palm’s tournament-caliber golf course presents an enticing blend of power and precision-oriented holes. Traditional square tee boxes give the course a classic feel, and large landing areas and subtly-elevated greens emphasize approach shot values.
A game-improvement enthusiast’s dream, Old Palm’s 33-acre Golf Studio houses a double-ended range, V-1-equipped hitting bay with TrackMan technology and short-game area. Three full-length practice holes – a par 3, 4 and 5 – allow golfers to replicate shots and angles they encounter on the par-72 course.
The club’s newest neighborhood, Isle Estates, is scheduled to open next week. Four model homes, ranging from nearly 5,100 to more than 5,500 sq. ft. under air, will be showcased. Each is beautifully sited on a one-third acre home site overlooking one of Old Palm’s largest lakes and the golf course. Of its 33 planned home sites, 22 will be included in the first release. Prices will be set in the coming weeks, but are anticipated to range from $2 to $3 million per home.
